Get up close with one of Woomen's squad members, Napoleon Candelaria!
What have you been busy with lately?Right now I have been busy with clients, and some campaigns and corporate work.
What are your fave hobbies aside from makeup? My hobbies are shopping for makeup, scrolling the net for new makeup releases. I also love fashion. I am obsessed with eyewear and bags for so long. I also would love to travel if the schedule permits it.
What are your makeup must-haves? Essentials?
I love a good primer, a blinding highlight, and beautiful lashes.
AS RECOMMENDED BY NAPOLEON:
Napoleon says: I love the Guerlain L’Or Radiance Primer cos it tightens the skin and gives it a nice glow, the Smashbox and Benefit ones for pore erasing properties and if you’re on a budget, the NYX Angel Veil Primer is so good too.
Napoleon says: For lashes, I love the Lilly Lashes in Miami and Mykonos, for budget ones, I like Red Cherry Lashes and Miniso has 3D lashes that won't break the bank.
Napoleon says: For highlighter, I'll take it any way shape or form. Hahaha. But for powder highlight, I love Jeffree Star Peach Goddess and Siberian Gold, I love the Cover FX Highlight Drops in Moonlight, and the Wet n Wild Highlighter in Precious Petals.
When did you realize that beauty & makeup is your passion? For so long, I have been obsessed with fashion. Even in my high school days. And I think great fashion needs great makeup to fully realize the fantasy. So I started as a stylist. But back then, makeup artists weren’t that adventurous or experimental with looks so I took it upon myself to learn makeup. So I can do it all by myself. 😂
Do you have a beauty philosophy? My philosophy is, good skin is the base of good makeup. Taking care of your skin is essential!
Do you have any beauty secrets that you often give out to your clients?
I always tell them drink lots of water and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!
When and how did you start being a makeup artist? Take us back to the early days of your career.I started out as a stylist and I guess it progressed as I got to know more about the ins and outs of fashion and beauty. I started 2012 and I haven’t looked back since. 😂
Who are your current clients? Where do you currently work?
My current clients mostly consist of teens and women who like the whole “instaglam” look. But I also tone it down for moms and more mature clients that like a softer, more natural look.
Tell us a story about your first ever client. How did it go?My first was actually my cousin. We didn’t have money then to pay for her and makeup as she was one of the sagalas. So I bought some cheap makeup and hairspray and I went full speed ahead. The look was good, albeit generic. But it was good nonetheless.
Tell us about your most memorable work to date. What makes it stand out most to you? Some of my best moments were when I was featured in international magazines [like 7 Roar Magazine based in California]. It felt good to be validated by the international public.
What are the highs and lows of being a makeup artist?
Highs are that I have my time to myself. Personally, I don’t like being tied down. I prefer not to be a paper pusher. So my job is very apt to my personality. Lows are sometimes me and the client are not a good match aesthetically. But we just need to live and learn.
Do you have any dream projects or dream clients?Dream projects are of course international campaigns. And clients? I don’t have a particular one cos I believe that all people have a certain beauty waiting to be unleashed. And if I am the one who can make their wishes come true, then they are my dream client.
Any advice for aspiring makeup artists and also for those who are just starting? My advice. Eat, drink sleep makeup. Absorb everything. There’s a lot of media that you can go get lessons and inspiration from. Practice on yourself, practice on your mom, your sisters. Basically anyone who will agree. Because in makeup, application is more important than just visualization. And save for high quality items that you love and will use over and over again. Most importantly, love your job. If your heart is not in it, it will show.
What do you love most as a squad member of Woomen Philippines?
I love being in Woomen because we are a family here. A family united in beauty on the inside and out.
